The Porpoise class is where children stop learning to swim and start actually swimming. Freestyle gets cleaner, side breathing locks in, and backstroke joins the lineup. Most parents call this the "wait, when did they get so good?" stage.
As one of EVO's most popular intermediate swimming classes in Mesa, AZ, and Gilbert, Porpoise builds on the freestyle basics introduced in Sea Lion and adds the endurance and second stroke that round out a real swimmer.
At the intermediate level, technique matters. EVO's certified instructors break down each stroke so children build habits that hold up as they progress.
Stroke refinement needs eyes on every swimmer. With four students per coach, Porpoise stays small enough for meaningful correction in every session.
Lessons continue year-round at the swim school Gilbert, AZ families count on, regardless of outside temperatures.

The Porpoise class is built for swimmers ready to refine technique and grow endurance. Children typically move into Porpoise from Sea Lion, where they were introduced to freestyle. Porpoise sharpens that freestyle, adds backstroke, and starts building the stamina that prepares swimmers for advanced swim lessons later in the EVO pathway.

Freestyle with side breathing. Smoothing out the stroke and timing breath properly to the side.
Backstroke fundamentals. Building proper body position and movement for a strong second stroke.
Endurance building. Growing stamina and confidence across longer distances.
Sessions run 30 minutes in EVO's warm indoor pool, one class per week.

Babies can begin the Starfish class as early as 3 months old. At this stage, infant swimming lessons focus on water comfort and breath control rather than strokes, making early enrollment safe and age-appropriate.
Yes. EVO's Starfish class is a parent-tot swim class where a parent or caregiver joins the baby in the water for every session. The class covers water acclimation, basic skills, and parent-child bonding.
Both year-round locations in Gilbert and Mesa feature indoor, climate-controlled pools. Water temperature stays warm and consistent regardless of the season.
Bring a swim diaper, a towel, and a change of clothes for you and your baby. No goggles or special gear are needed for the Starfish level.
The Starfish class has a 12:1 student-to-coach ratio. Because a parent or caregiver is in the water with each baby, your little one has both professional guidance and your support at all times.
Once your child is ready, the next step is the Pufferfish class, another parent-tot level with an 8:1 ratio for ages 16 to 24 months. From there, swimmers move into EVO's entry-level classes like Otter and Seal.
