EVO's standard learn-to-swim pathway ends with the Advanced Stroke Class, a 60-minute, 12:1 program for swimmers ages 6 to 12. Sessions cover all four competitive strokes, flip turns, lane etiquette, and the team-style format. Most parents in this class are already thinking about a competitive swim team as the next step. From there, the Rio Swim Team's Development Training Program is the entry into actual team practices. There are three groups within Development Training, and swimmers are placed based on current skill level rather than age.
Rio Swim Team's Development Training Program
Advanced Stroke Group
The first team-side group. For swimmers who have graduated from EVO's stroke lesson program or can perform the basics of all four strokes. Practices are one hour, 1x or 2x per week. Coaches are typically in the water for hands-on correction.
Development 1 Group
The next step. For swimmers who can perform all four strokes by legal USA Swimming standards and do a flip turn with a streamlined push off the wall. One hour, 1x or 2x per week, coaches instructing from the deck.
Development 2 Group
For pre-high-school swimmers who can perform all four strokes, starts, and turns proficiently by legal USA Swimming standards. Training runs 1.5 hours, 1x to 4x per week. Where actual competitive conditioning begins.
After Development: Competitive Junior and High School
Swimmers who progress through Development Training get recruited into Rio's Competitive Junior 1 Group (2x per week, 1.25 to 1.5 hours, ages 8 to 14), then Competitive Junior 2 (up to 4x per week, 1.5 hours). High schoolers train in Rio's High School Training Program, available November through July outside the official high school swim season. That's what separates the EVO-to-Rio pipeline from enrolling in a Mesa, AZ swim team off the street: the same staff knows your child from their earliest lessons.
Swim Team Tryouts at Rio: How It Actually Works
Most parents searching for swim team tryouts in Gilbert or Mesa expect a one-shot audition. Rio Swim Team doesn't work that way. Rio offers a free evaluation for group placement. The evaluation is about finding where each swimmer fits, not about cutting kids.
How to schedule:
1. Call the Rio office at 480-404-6191 to schedule a free evaluation. 2. Complete pre-registration online via the Rio Swim Team website. 3. Call the office to confirm enrollment and payment details.
Why Families Choose the EVO-to-Rio Pipeline
Same facility, same staff. Kids who learn at EVO know the pool, coaches, and front desk. The transition to team training is operational rather than emotional.
No external tryout pressure. Rio's free evaluation places swimmers based on skill rather than performance under pressure.
Year-round training. Both EVO and Rio run year-round, with Rio offering 1x to 4x per week practice depending on group and schedule. Indoor and outdoor pools. EVO's SanTan Gilbert facility includes an outdoor 8-lane 25-yard pool used for competitive training alongside the indoor teaching pool.
